Trump Delays Clayton’s Confirmation as Director of National Intelligence

Jay Clayton is scheduled to appear before the Senate Intelligence Committee for a confirmation hearing as Director of National Intelligence. Clayton, who currently leads the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, has tackled high-profile cases, such as indicting former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Previously, he chaired the Securities and Exchange Commission during Trump’s first term.

President Trump has postponed Clayton’s nomination. Trump expressed his demands on Truth Social, linking the approval of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act’s Section 702 reauthorization to a voting restrictions package that hasn’t progressed in the Senate. Trump seeks the approval of another nominee, Jamie McDonald, to be U.S. Attorney before proceeding with Clayton’s confirmation. Bill Pulte continues as Acting Director of National Intelligence due to this delay.

Pulte’s temporary appointment sparked concern due to his lack of intelligence experience and aggressive public attacks on political figures opposing Trump. Pulte’s prior role as director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency saw him utilizing social media to accuse Trump’s adversaries of mortgage fraud. Democrats and some Republicans fear he might misuse his interim intelligence role.

The delay influences the scheduled process for Clayton. Senate lawmakers intended for a swift confirmation, aiming for Clayton to assume the role by June 19, to limit Pulte’s temporary tenure. Clayton would follow Tulsi Gabbard, the departing Director of National Intelligence, who resigned due to her husband’s illness. Her tenure, despite limited intelligence experience, was contentious; confirmed amidst criticism over her past support for autocratic leaders.
