The Alabama Crimson Tide reached the College Football Playoff in Kalen DeBoer’s second season as head coach. However, the team now faces significant challenges in returning to the playoffs in 2026. Key among these is replacing star quarterback Ty Simpson, who was a first-round pick by the Los Angeles Rams. Keelon Russell or Austin Mack are in line to take over this crucial role.
Despite strong performances, Alabama’s offense, particularly its running game, needs improvement. The team’s recruiting efforts suffered a setback when prized recruit Hollywood Smothers chose Texas over Alabama. Teams like Texas, LSU, and Georgia are heavily investing in their rosters, providing tough competition.
In a recent interview with Garry L. Harris on WVUA 23, Kalen DeBoer emphasized the need for increased fan support. He noted, “We’ve got to continue to grow. We’ve got to adjust to the times. We need the support of anyone who wants to be part of this.” DeBoer highlighted the importance of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) support, stating, “Having an incredible staff is great, but you must have the NIL support to acquire players, as they are the ones making plays on Saturdays.”
DeBoer signed a lucrative seven-year contract extension worth $87.7 million in April, boasting a promising 20-8 record over two seasons. Yet, recruiting for the 2027 class has been challenging, with 247 Sports ranking Alabama at No. 71.
Despite these hurdles, DeBoer is optimistic about Alabama’s competitiveness in the SEC. He remarked, “I think we’re very competitive. The staff, program, and resources we provide our scholarship players are unmatched.”
To regain a dominance similar to that under former coach Nick Saban, Alabama needs to enhance its NIL funding to level up with its SEC and Big Ten competitors.
