Michelle Obama and George W. Bush’s Friendship Shines at Obama Presidential Center Opening
The opening ceremony of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago showcased the friendship between former First Lady Michelle Obama and former President George W. Bush. During the event, Bush gave Obama a tin of Altoids, recalling a well-known moment from Sen. John McCain’s funeral in 2018. At that time, Bush was seen discreetly giving Obama what was later identified as a cough drop.
Michelle Obama, speaking on ‘Today,’ described their seating arrangement as a matter of protocol, often placing them together at official events. ‘He is my partner in crime at every major event with all the former leaders,’ she said. Obama’s words about Bush were filled with warmth, calling him ‘a wonderful man’ and ‘a funny man,’ expressing her affection by saying, ‘I love him to death.’
Bush repeated his candy-sharing gesture at his father’s funeral, when he passed Obama a mint or candy during a handshake. In a recent discussion with his daughter, Jenna Bush Hager, Bush clarified that he had handed Obama an Altoid at McCain’s funeral.
The gesture resonates with many, symbolizing a moment of bipartisanship. Bush commented on this by saying, ‘It turns out the country is starved to see a White center-right Republican and an African American center-left Democrat having fun and communicating as citizens, not merely political figures.’
Michelle Obama welcomed Bush’s gift with a smile, proudly displaying the tin in a photo taken with him. The event also included other former leaders, like Bill and Hillary Clinton and Joe and Jill Biden, who joined the Obamas on stage for the ceremony.
