The H5N1 bird flu has made its way to Australia, marking its presence on every continent. The virus was identified in a brown skua, a seabird found near Esperance on Western Australia’s southern coast at Cape Le Grand National Park.
The Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry announced the discovery. In response, Australia’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has initiated a nationally coordinated plan. This plan involves collaboration with the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and various stakeholders across Western Australia to mitigate the disease’s impact.
The bird flu outbreak has severely affected the United States, resulting in millions of avian deaths. This has led to increased prices and shortages in grocery stores, especially eggs. However, human infection remains rare.
Addressing the outbreak, Australian federal Agricultural Secretary Julie Collins stated during a press conference that staying free from bird flu indefinitely was never guaranteed. Western Australia’s agricultural minister, Jackie Jarvis, noted in a Friday conference that their early detection system had functioned effectively. This allowed for immediate actions, such as isolating the bird and conducting tests.
Jarvis emphasized that Australia’s preparedness measures are effective, with the surveillance and reporting systems functioning correctly. This was evident as the bird was promptly reported to the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development for further examination.
By Saturday, additional tests verified that the strain originated from regions like Heard Island and McDonald Islands near Antarctica. These areas suffered significant wildlife losses; last year, around 13,000 elephant seal pups from a 17,000 population perished after exposure. These islands are protected wildlife sanctuaries.
Jarvis mentioned that on the Australian mainland, there have been no recent detections in poultry and no mass mortality observed. A second suspected case involving another migratory bird near Esperance is under investigation.
