The Alabama Crimson Tide made its first College Football Playoff (CFP) appearance under head coach Kalen DeBoer last season. They successfully defeated Oklahoma in the initial round but faced a significant loss against Indiana in the quarterfinal at the Rose Bowl.
In April, DeBoer secured a seven-year contract extension valued at $87.7 million. Alabama has high expectations for its head coach moving forward.
This season, the Crimson Tide faces challenges as they aim to return to the CFP, with major questions surrounding their roster. Notably, the quarterback position is a key area of focus. Keelon Russell and Austin Mack will compete for the starting role during training camp. Additionally, the defense has lost four players to the NFL draft.
Alabama’s nine-game SEC schedule presents another hurdle. Here are three pivotal games that will shape DeBoer’s third season in Tuscaloosa:
Georgia at Alabama (Oct. 10)
Alabama has managed to outperform Georgia during the regular season over the past two years. In 2024, the Crimson Tide defeated Georgia 41-34. Last season, they narrowly won against Georgia 24-21 in September.
However, Georgia avenged these defeats in the SEC championship by overpowering Alabama 28-7. Georgia appears set to contend for the national championship this year, making the early October matchup a crucial test for Alabama. The Crimson Tide needs to improve its run game, which recorded -3 yards in the SEC championship, if they are to overcome Georgia this time.
Texas A&M at Alabama (Oct. 24)
The face-off with Texas A&M could be a decisive factor in determining which SEC team advances to the CFP. The Aggies are primed for another CFP run with quarterback Marcel Reed returning to College Station.
Alabama’s front seven must control Reed to secure victory. Miami and Texas achieved this last season, capitalizing on winning battles in the trenches. In 2025, the Crimson Tide faced challenges in this aspect during significant games. The support from the home crowd might give DeBoer’s team the edge they need.
Alabama at LSU (Nov. 7)
LSU is expected to be favored under new head coach Lane Kiffin and a roster reportedly worth $40 million. Playing at Tiger Stadium in November, Alabama faces a rigorous test.
By this stage in the season, Alabama may need a victory over LSU to remain in the CFP hunt. The Crimson Tide’s secondary must excel against LSU’s highly skilled receiver corps.
