Recent satellite images reveal Russia’s enhanced defenses around the Crimean Bridge, a vital link between the annexed Crimea and Russian territory, highlighting Ukraine’s intensified pressure on the region. Images from Google Earth and the European Union’s Copernicus satellites show floating buoys deployed around the bridge, captured between October 7, 2025, and June 16, 2026.
According to Sidharth Kaushal, a senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) in London, the fortifications aim to hinder Ukrainian explosive-laden drones in the water, facilitating interception by Russian forces of attacking surface vessels. Ukraine’s recent operations in Crimea involve targeting logistics sites and fuel facilities that support Russia’s efforts in southern Ukraine with medium-range drones.
Ukraine’s attacks have expanded to hit Russian oil facilities, including a refinery close to the Kremlin in Moscow, amplifying pressure on Russia’s resources. Since Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014, the area remains a military hub and holiday spot for Russian tourists, despite ongoing Ukrainian strikes.
Kyiv aims to reclaim Crimea and other regions internationally recognized as Ukrainian territory, while Russia maintains its control. Territorial disputes have stalled peace talks between the two nations. The Crimean Bridge, or Kerch Bridge, connecting Russia’s Krasnodar region to Crimea, has become a contentious symbol. Constructed in 2018 under President Vladimir Putin, the bridge has been targeted by Ukraine.
The bridge has experienced closures and repairs due to security incidents, including an explosive attack in October 2022 that resulted in extensive damage and three fatalities, according to Russian officials. Ukraine’s previous drone attacks led Russia to implement additional defenses around the bridge.
Russia has a history of deploying netting and buoys as protective measures, Kaushal mentioned. Recently, authorities in Crimea announced a restriction on fuel sales to civilians, prioritizing government agencies, and imposed bans on outdoor events. Streetlights were turned off, and public transport schedules reduced, indicating the success of Ukraine’s drone campaign in exerting pressure on Crimea.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated Kyiv’s intention to isolate Crimea, supported by strikes on various targets near the bridge, including oil sites and radar systems critical for Russia’s air defense. Ukrainian military reported that the strikes over the weekend inflicted damage on the Kavkaz oil port in Krasnodar and disrupted car ferries essential for supplying Russian troops in occupied territories.
