Political Tensions Impact the Gordie Howe Bridge Opening

The U.S.-Canada border hosts North America’s busiest land crossing. Each year, millions of trucks transport billions in goods between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. A major development at this crossing is the Gordie Howe International Bridge. Completed but not yet open, this project is named after the famed Canadian hockey player who was a Detroit Red Wings legend.

Construction of the bridge began in 2018, aiming for an early opening this year. However, political issues have stalled these plans. President Trump intervened via social media, insisting that Canada should share ownership of the bridge with the United States. This demand has delayed the opening.

In June, a grand opening was planned but canceled at the last minute. Stephen Laskowski, president of the Canadian Trucking Alliance, was en route to the event when he received the cancellation notice. He shared with NPR, “I was heading out. My wife said, ‘Your phone’s ringing’ … it said, don’t bother going.”

The Canadian government and Michigan jointly own the bridge. Canada funded the construction and agreed to split toll fees with Michigan until costs are recouped. However, this arrangement has not satisfied the president.

Some speculate that the Moroun family, owners of the competing Ambassador Bridge, may have influenced Trump’s position. The family has made significant political contributions, including a $1 million donation to a Trump-aligned super PAC.
