Supreme Court Decision on Transgender Athletes
President Donald Trump hailed the Supreme Court’s recent decision as a significant victory. The Court ruled 6-3 in favor of West Virginia and Idaho, supporting the states against transgender athletes seeking participation in girls’ sports.
Trump expressed his approval on Truth Social, stating, “BIG WIN: The United States Supreme Court just RULED AGAINST MEN PLAYING IN WOMEN’S SPORTS.” He emphasized the significance of removing this controversial situation from consideration.
States Empowered by Ruling
The states, supported by the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), have gained the legal backing to maintain women’s and girls’ sports for biological females. The ruling allows them to set eligibility criteria based on biological sex, consistent with Title IX and the Equal Protection Clause.
While more than half of U.S. states can now protect women’s sports without the risk of legal challenges, 23 states remain without laws addressing this issue. Some of these states even have legislation to safeguard transgender athletes in girls’ sports.
Trump’s Executive Order
In February 2025, Trump signed the “No Men In Women’s Sports” executive order, imposing stricter regulations on transgender athletes and promoting state compliance. This sparked a dispute between Trump and Maine Governor Janet Mills, with threats to suspend federal funding for non-compliant states.
Despite Trump’s freeze on funds to Maine, a federal judge later ruled the funds must be released. The Supreme Court’s decision now provides legal protections for compliant states.
Education Secretary’s Statement
Education Secretary Linda McMahon praised the ruling, stating it confirms the right of states to prevent men from competing in women’s sports, thereby protecting female spaces and ensuring no discrimination occurs based on sex.
According to McMahon, the Trump Administration has sought to restore Title IX’s protections for women and girls, and this ruling further solidifies those efforts.
Public Opinion
Survey data indicates that approximately 80% of Americans oppose the participation of biological males in girls’ and women’s sports.
