Balinese Ritual Dance Marks End of Galungan Festival
In the village of Karangasem, Bali, Ketut Alit Widiantari and over 30 women partook in a significant cultural event. They walked barefoot into a temple courtyard, adorned in traditional costumes and headdresses made from vibrant leaves and flowers. This ceremony took place during the Kuningan holiday, which signifies the conclusion of the Galungan festival. The festival celebrates the victory of good over evil, a theme deeply rooted in Balinese Hindu beliefs.
Each year, the Kuningan holiday marks the end of the 10-day Galungan festival. It is a revered time when deities and ancestral spirits are believed to return to the heavens after visiting earth to bless their families and communities.
In Tista village, 14-year-old Ketut Alit Widiantari and her peers performed the sacred Rejang Kuningan dance at the Puseh temple. This temple serves as a spiritual hub for the local Balinese Hindu community. The Rejang dance, with its slow and ceremonial movements, is a sacred offering to the unseen entities, including God and the ancestors of the villagers.
The girls received blessings from a temple priest before they began their dance.
Their costumes and headdresses underwent careful examination as part of the ritual. Rejang dance manifests in various forms across Bali, shaped by the occasion and the community maintaining its practice.
In Karangasem, villages cling to unique traditions, even reflected in their temple designs. Here, traditions like the Rejang dance become more than sacred offerings. They’re expressions of cultural identity. The dancers’ attire, music, and formations encapsulate their community’s essence, sealing the year’s Galungan and Kuningan events with tradition, prayer, and dance.
During the performance, Balinese musicians played traditional instruments, adding to the dance’s spiritual ambiance. The gathering of women for the Rejang dance underlined the collective spirit. The dance not only maintained its cultural heritage but also reinforced a shared identity among locals.
