Heavy Casualties in Russia-Ukraine Conflict

A recent study reveals that more than two million Russian and Ukrainian troops have been killed or wounded since Russia’s invasion began in February 2022. The study was published by the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

Russia has endured a heavier toll, with 1.4 million troops killed or wounded. Of these, 450,000 were fatalities, four times greater than U.S. deaths in all wars since World War II.

Ukrainian forces have suffered between 525,000 to 625,000 casualties. This includes 125,000 to 150,000 deaths, according to the study.

Officials note that calculating accurate casualty figures is challenging. Moscow often undercounts its losses, and Ukraine does not disclose official figures. The study used American and British estimates among other sources.

The casualty figures highlight Russia’s slow military progress in Ukraine. In some areas, Russian troops advance fewer than 165 feet daily. In February, Ukraine managed to gain more ground than it lost for the first time since 2023 as it launched an offensive in the south.
