Education Secretary Linda McMahon has voiced strong concerns regarding the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold bans on transgender athletes in women’s sports. McMahon emphasizes the importance of preserving fairness and safety for female athletes. She criticizes the Democratic party for ignoring these issues and reaffirms the Trump administration’s dedication to protecting women’s rights through Title IX.
The recent Supreme Court ruling, decided 6-3, supports state laws that limit participation by transgender athletes in women’s sports. California, however, is among 23 states without such protective laws and has had legislation since 2014 allowing males to compete with females. In response to the court’s decision, a spokesperson for California Governor Gavin Newsom stated that the ruling will not affect the state’s existing policies.
“The Supreme Court’s decision does not affect California’s laws. The state remains committed to ensuring every Californian, including the LGBTQ community, is met with dignity and respect.”
A source from Newsom’s office shared with Fox News Digital a list illustrating the governor’s commitment to transgender rights. This includes making it easier to change gender markers on documents and appointing several transgender judges. California was noted as one of 22 states requiring transgender students to participate in sports according to their gender identity, with the relevant law enacted in 2013.
Controversy arose when transgender athlete AB Hernandez won two state titles in girls’ sports, prompting protest from groups like “Save Girls Sports.” Former NCAA soccer player Sophia Lorey led a press conference to highlight concerns over fairness. Further tension emerged when the California Interscholastic Federation adjusted podium positions to recognize other athletes finishing behind Hernandez.
The Trump administration’s Department of Justice has initiated lawsuits against California educational agencies over their policies related to transgender athletes in women’s sports. These lawsuits followed Hernandez’s victories in various track and field events.
Governor Newsom expressed frustration over males competing in girls’ sports, noting a public dividing opinion, highlighted in conversations during his podcast and a later interview. He stated that even strong supporters of transgender policies voiced concerns over fairness in sports.
The matter gained further attention when Newsom’s comments led to backlash from the LGBTQ caucus and an alleged discussion with President Trump. Trump has reportedly expressed enjoyment over the ongoing litigation and controversies, frustrating Newsom as he manages the complex political landscape.
Jackson Thompson, a sports reporter for Fox News Digital, has extensively covered this issue, contributing to federal actions regarding Title IX enforcement.
