A disturbing event occurred on a flight from Seattle to Las Vegas involving Julio Alvarez Lopez, a Mexican national holding lawful permanent resident status since 2018. Lopez pleaded guilty to assaulting a fellow passenger using a makeshift weapon constructed from three pens bound with hairbands. Federal prosecutors reported that Lopez’s aim was to harm the passenger by attempting to stab through the eye to reach the brain.
Incident Details
The incident transpired approximately 30 minutes before landing. Lopez, after returning from a restroom visit, launched an attack on a passenger seated across the aisle by punching, hitting, and stabbing him. Witnesses recounted that the scene turned chaotic with “blood everywhere,” and the victim’s wife unsuccessfully attempted to halt the assault while protecting their young son.
Lopez was heard yelling, “I’ll only talk to the FBI,” while moving toward the front of the aircraft. A law enforcement officer on board managed to command Lopez to sit and, with the assistance of flight attendants and passengers, restrained him using flex cuffs until the flight safely landed at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas.
Legal Proceedings
Upon landing, Lopez was promptly taken into custody by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers. He was charged with one count of assault with a dangerous weapon following the January 24, 2024, attack.
During an FBI interview, Lopez admitted to creating the weapon before boarding. He believed the victim, referred to as C.R. in court documents, was following him, suspecting that C.R. was linked to the Cartel. Lopez confessed his intent to inflict fatal harm by penetrating C.R.’s eye.
The victim sustained substantial injuries to his eye and body. Court documents record observations from fellow passengers noting Lopez’s odd behavior prior to the attack, such as fidgeting, frequent glove handling, multiple accesses to his backpack, and avoidance of eye contact.
Ongoing Case
Witnesses also described Lopez as having specific physical traits and clothing, aiding in the investigation. Lopez, claiming asylum status in the U.S., indicated he was evading pursuit by the mafia.
The sentencing for Lopez is scheduled for September 22. The case continues to unfold, emphasizing the importance of aircraft security measures and vigilance among passengers and crew.
