The White House caused a stir this week by sharing an ‘America’s Eras Tour’ graphic on their Instagram account, referencing President Donald Trump with imagery inspired by Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. The post, shared before Independence Day celebrations, featured historical images of Trump with the caption ‘It’s been a long time coming,’ a phrase linked to Swift’s tour.
This came as a surprise, considering Trump’s past critical remarks about Swift. In 2024, he declared, ‘I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!’ Responses to the graphic on social media pointed out the contradiction, with users highlighting Trump’s previous statements about Swift.
The reactions included remarks on the irony of the post, given Swift’s public political endorsements for Democratic candidates in 2018, 2020, and 2024. Their relationship has deteriorated over the years. Their first known public interaction was in August 2012, when Trump thanked Swift for a photo on social media.
The tone changed in 2018 after Swift criticized Republican Marsha Blackburn and indirectly Trump. Trump responded by saying he liked Swift’s music ’25 percent less.’ As the 2024 elections neared, Trump again criticized Swift on social media, questioning her political choices and mentioning her relationship with NFL star Travis Kelce.
Despite this, Trump’s tone has softened recently, expressing goodwill toward Swift and Kelce’s relationship. However, the White House’s Swift-themed graphic comes amid rumors about Swift and Kelce’s wedding events in New York. The White House declined to comment further.
Swift’s Political Stance
Swift has been vocal about her political views. She endorsed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in 2020 and criticized Trump through social media during protests following George Floyd’s death. Swift argued that Trump had been fueling racial tensions.
In her 2024 endorsements for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, she signed off humorously as ‘Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady,’ a nod to past remarks from Republican nominee JD Vance. Swift’s comments and endorsements align with her desire to be on the ‘right side of history.’
The graphic’s intent—whether it was a playful nod to Swift or a commentary on different American historical eras—remains unclear. The tension between Trump and Swift continues, highlighted by Trump’s previous admissions of dislike for the singer’s political stance.
