Celebrating Illinois on the United States’ 250th Anniversary

This Fourth of July marks 250 years of the United States. It’s a time of reflection on our nation’s journey and achievements. While some may feel conflicted due to current divisions, historical parallels exist. In 1876, as the country celebrated its Centennial, Chicago citizens expressed mixed feelings. The Tribune noted on July 5, 1876, that post-Civil War, Chicagoans showed little interest in Independence Day.

“Since the (Civil) War, the average Chicagoan has taken comparatively little interest in ‘the day we celebrate,’” the Tribune noted.
