FAA Investigates Incidents Involving Drones and Fireworks Near Airports
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently investigating a series of incidents involving drones and fireworks impacting aircraft operations near major airports.
Drone Strike Near JFK Airport
Cheryl Casone of FOX Business highlighted the growing risk posed by drones in proximity to airports. A recent event involved a JetBlue flight impacted near JFK Airport, with a helicopter narrowly avoiding a large toy airplane on a separate occasion. Drones pose a significant challenge as they lack transponders, making tracking difficult.
The FAA has initiated a safety campaign to address this issue. They receive approximately 100 complaints each month about drone interference. Violators could face fines up to $100,000.
Fireworks Mortar Incident at Chicago Midway
On the Fourth of July, a Delta Air Lines flight was struck by a fireworks mortar while descending into Chicago Midway International Airport. According to the FAA, Delta Flight 1076 landed safely at Midway at around 8:30 p.m. local time.
The flight took off from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and arrived at Midway without any passengers or crew sustaining injuries. Post-landing, Delta mechanics conducted an inspection and reported no damages to the aircraft.
Ongoing Investigations
The Chicago police reported minor paint damage from the fireworks impact. Additional checks will determine any further damage. However, Delta’s preliminary inspections revealed no harm to the aircraft.
The FAA will continue to examine the incident. Efforts to identify the source of the fireworks are underway, but authorities have yet to ascertain responsibility.
Delta has committed to cooperating with the FAA and relevant authorities in their investigations.
