After a scoreless first half, Erling Haaland was pivotal in Norway’s 2-1 victory over Brazil in the World Cup Round of 16. The match, played on Sunday, saw the Manchester City star breaking through Brazil’s defense.
Haaland scored his first goal with a header at the 79-minute mark, bringing Norway to a 1-0 lead. He secured Norway’s victory 11 minutes later with another goal, this time defeating Brazil’s goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
“It means everything. Honestly, I didn’t expect it,” Haaland shared with Fox Sports about the win. “There’s not much to say. Look at the streets in Norway. I’m 25 years old, and I’ve never experienced anything like it. I wish I was in Oslo now, celebrating with everyone, but it’s unreal and this will change a lot for Norway.”
Haaland’s performance highlighted his emerging presence as one of soccer’s brightest young stars. His two goals in this match brought his total to seven for the 2026 World Cup, equaling Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.
“It’s been a good Golden Boot race so far. I’m trying to do my job for Norway, and so far, so good,” Haaland commented on the competition for the top goalscorer award.
While Messi remains a favorite to end the World Cup as the leading goalscorer, the outcome will depend significantly on team progress. Haaland and Mbappe continue to shine with multiple goal performances.
Norway now waits to find out if they will face Mexico or England, who were scheduled to play Sunday night in Mexico City. Norway’s recent win boosts their standing, placing them sixth in the DraftKings Sportsbook odds to win the 2026 World Cup.
