The Villages, a major retirement community in Florida, has traditionally been a bastion of conservative views. Historically, left-leaning residents often kept a low profile to avoid social exclusion, whether from golf groups or local clubs. However, with Vice President Kamala Harris emerging as the Democratic presidential candidate, there’s been a noticeable shift in confidence among local Democrats.
Growing Democratic Presence
Diane Foley, president of the Villages Democratic Club, notes a significant growth in membership, doubling since the 2020 election cycle to around 1,500 members. Residents now more openly support Harris through public displays, such as parades of decorated golf carts. Doug Emhoff, Harris’ husband, has even visited the community, boosting morale.
Some Democrats, like Joe Dubman and his friends, wear T-shirts supporting Harris, while former Republicans like Howard Underwood find common ground with local Democrats. Underwood, while hesitant to display political support too visibly, acknowledges a shifting political scene in the area.
Balancing Friendships and Politics
Residents like Glen and Suzi Smith, who participate openly in Democratic activities, reveal that despite differing political views, relationships with conservative neighbors often remain amicable. For instance, Dave Farraday, a retired utility worker, maintains friendly relations with neighbors despite his continued support for Trump due to economic concerns.
Community and Political Events
The community hosts a variety of political events. Lobbyist Barbara DeVane spoke at a Villages Democratic Club meeting to support marijuana legalization. Meanwhile, Shelly Newman, a resident who actively canvasses, shares how initially she was more concerned about being a Democrat than her religious identity. Residents often approach her discreetly, expressing relief at finding others with similar political leanings.
The emergence of Harris as a candidate has invigorated local Democrats, resulting in more vocal displays of political identity. Golf cart parades and other public displays signify an increasing willingness to express Democratic views within this conservative stronghold.
