Judge Tony Graf Oversees High-Profile Utah Case

Judge Tony Graf, serving in Utah’s Fourth District Court, is overseeing a significant legal case. His experience as a prosecutor in Utah, prior to his appointment as a judge less than a year ago, plays a critical role in this process.

Recently, Judge Graf began presiding over a hearing to decide if there is sufficient evidence to proceed to trial in the case of Tyler Robinson. Robinson stands accused of the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on a Utah university campus last fall.

Judge Graf’s career in law started with his role as a prosecutor in Davis County and Utah County, the latter being the location of Mr. Kirk’s death. His appointment to the judiciary came in August 2025 after Governor Spencer Cox selected him to fill a judicial vacancy. Praising Graf’s ethical standards and reliable judgment, Governor Cox made the announcement public in May 2025.

Judge Graf’s educational background includes a bachelor’s and law degree from the University of Utah. He also holds a master’s degree in criminal justice from Weber State University.

Since taking the bench, Graf has managed cases that include child sexual abuse and threats against high-ranking officials in Utah, such as Governor Cox. His current task is to assess the prosecution’s evidence against Robinson, with the hearing projected to last through the week.
