France’s star footballer Kylian Mbappé publicly criticized Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla for making racist remarks following Paraguay’s World Cup loss to France in the round of 16. Amarilla, from Paraguay’s Liberal Radical Party, made derogatory comments online after Mbappé’s decisive penalty led to France’s victory.
In a statement on social media platform X, Mbappé described Amarilla as a “despicable woman” and said her actions were “unworthy” of a congressional representative. He emphasized that her racism overshadowed the notable efforts of Paraguay’s players during the tournament.
The Paraguayan government disapproved of Amarilla’s comments, labeling them as opposing national values of respect and dignity. They clarified that her opinions do not reflect those of the government or the populace. The French Football Federation also condemned the remarks, describing them as “utterly abhorrent” and planned to refer the issue to legal authorities.
Support for Mbappé came from French President Emmanuel Macron and Sports Minister Marina Ferrari. Both officials underscored the ideals that Mbappé and France represent, including liberty and equality, highlighting Mbappé’s leadership both on and off the field. Macron acknowledged Mbappé’s role in combatting racism.
France’s assistant coach Guy Stéphan expressed his disapproval, calling the comments “indignant, abject, and scandalous.” Additionally, before the match, former Paraguay goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert sparked controversy with remarks about France’s team composition. Philippe Diallo, president of the French Football Federation, remarked on Chilavert’s past achievements and current status.
