Folarin Balogun, a striker for the United States men’s national team, found himself embroiled in unexpected circumstances during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The U.S. team faced a 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16, a match Balogun had not anticipated he would play.
Days earlier, on July 1, Balogun was shown a controversial red card after a challenge with Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Tarik Muharemovic. Despite the automatic one-game suspension that followed, FIFA decided to reverse the red card decision, allowing Balogun to participate against Belgium. This decision sparked debates about potential corruption and ethical concerns, catching Balogun in a situation beyond his control.
The coach of Belgium, Rudi Garcia, expressed his surprise at the decision, humorously likening the date to April Fools’ Day. Despite the situation, Garcia had positive words for Balogun after the match. “Balogun approached me during a difficult moment in his career,” Garcia commented. He emphasized that Balogun was not at fault for the situation and appreciated his initiative to speak with him.
Garcia also acknowledged Balogun’s skill, noting his potential as an attacker. However, he confidently relied on his defenders, Brandon Mechele and Nathan Ngoy, to effectively manage Balogun during the match. Indeed, Balogun had minimal impact in the game, as reflected by the dominant performance of the Belgian team. The U.S. managed only two shots on goal, one being a free-kick scored by Malik Tillman.
Despite the setback, Balogun concluded his debut World Cup as the leading scorer for the USMNT with three goals. The U.S. team has been eliminated in the Round of 16 in their last four World Cup appearances, having missed the 2018 tournament, and has not reached the quarterfinal since 2002. Belgium, having previously defeated the U.S. in the same stage back in 2014, now prepares to play against Spain in the quarterfinal at SoFi Stadium on July 10.
