Democrats in Maine and across the nation are urgently seeking a new candidate for the Senate seat in Maine. Graham Platner, the current nominee, is expected to withdraw following a rape allegation that has led many of his key supporters to distance themselves from his campaign.
If Platner officially exits the race before the upcoming Monday deadline, the party will have a brief window to select a replacement by July 27. Maine law requires this decision but does not offer specific guidelines on the selection process. Options being debated include holding a convention or organizing a statewide caucus later in the month.
The decision-making process is complex, with various Democratic factions vying to influence the choice. Recent events have heightened the importance of thorough vetting for any new candidate. The chosen nominee will need to quickly organize and fundraise to contest Senator Susan Collins, the Republican incumbent known for eluding Democratic challenges.
Potential Candidates
Troy Jackson, a known progressive, has emerged as a potential candidate. Jackson served as the president of Maine’s State Senate from 2018 to 2024 and shares ideological similarities with Platner. Platner previously endorsed Jackson as his preferred choice for governor. A logger by trade from Aroostook County in Northern Maine, Jackson is already taking steps to explore a Senate run, as indicated by the formation of an exploratory committee.
