Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner faces a deepening crisis as a former girlfriend accuses him of rape in 2021. This adds to previous controversies including allegations of physical abuse and a Nazi tattoo. The allegations have prompted Bernie Sanders and others to call for Platner’s withdrawal from the race.
Key endorsements were lost following these accusations. Fox News correspondent Alexis McAdams highlights the political fallout from these developments.
The Young Turks CEO Cenk Uygur accused mainstream media of politically undermining Platner. His accusation follows Politico’s publication of claims by Jenny Racicot, who alleged that Platner forced her to have sex with him in 2021 while intoxicated.
Platner denied the allegations, calling them false and troubling in a video from his campaign. He emphasized the inaccuracies in the media coverage of these allegations.
Unraveling of Platner’s Campaign
Platner’s campaign faces calls for him to exit the race due to these accusations. His past partners have alleged various forms of misconduct, further complicating his campaign. Despite Platner’s denial, political backlash from the allegations remains significant.
Platner’s rise was marked by anti-establishment messaging opposing corporate PACs and U.S. support for Israel. Uygur, a defender of Platner, warned against the Democratic Party backing pro-Israel, pro-PAC candidates, predicting a backlash from voters.
Accusations Against Platner
Uygur warned of character assassination attempts against Platner and his supporters. He argued the media targeted Platner due to his opposition to Israel, particularly relating to the Gaza conflict and U.S. support.
The New York Times reported accusations by Racicot and others, claiming negative attention focused unfairly on these accounts. Despite the scrutiny, some individuals interviewed spoke positively about Platner.
Among those distancing themselves from Platner were Reps. Ro Khanna, Rashida Tlaib, and Sen. Ruben Gallego. Sen. Bernie Sanders suggested Platner reconsider his candidacy.
Platner has not withdrawn, but acknowledged that his campaign needs to reflect on its future.
