Offices and hotels around East 42nd Street were evacuated due to structural damage affecting an office conversion project. Traffic in the area was halted, and fortunately, there were no reported injuries.
The partial collapse of a 37-story office building being converted into housing occurred in Midtown Manhattan on Tuesday. The incident disrupted the area significantly.
Construction Collapse
Early Tuesday morning, construction workers were converting an office building into a residential complex when structural issues began to emerge. Cliff Johnsen of the Local 638 steamfitters union reported The beams started bending
, with several floors sagging.
Workers evacuated the building located at 235 East 42nd Street, near Grand Central Terminal and the United Nations. A supervisor alerted 911, leading to an emergency response. Officials evacuated nearby buildings and closed streets to pedestrian and vehicular traffic due to the fear of further collapse.
Severe structural damage was identified between the 21st and 26th floors, although the building was still standing, it was deemed unstable. Businesses in the area faced displacement, and tourists were stranded as the city implemented a frozen zone covering several blocks.
Impact on City’s Housing Efforts
The project represented a significant effort to repurpose Midtown’s vacant office buildings to address New York City’s housing shortage. Developers aimed to make this the largest office-to-residential conversion in city history, with completion scheduled for next year.
However, Tuesday’s collapse raised concerns about the project’s future. Inspectors are working to understand the cause of the structural failure, how it can be rectified, and assessing the full scope of the damage.
