Tensions Escalate as US and Iran Exchange Strikes in the Strait of Hormuz
The United States military launched an attack on Iran early Wednesday, following Tehran’s alleged strikes on three ships in the Strait of Hormuz. This action was part of an American initiative that also stopped Iran from openly selling crude oil on the global market. In response, Iran targeted Bahrain and Kuwait, increasing fears of destabilization in the Middle East.
The conflict unfolded amid the funeral for Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who died at the war’s onset at 86. The ceremony, thought to lower tensions, saw calls for retaliation against U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Talks for a formal agreement, set to begin after Khamenei’s burial, aimed to discuss reopening the strait and Tehran’s nuclear program. The new hostilities threw those plans into doubt.
“The era of bullying and extortion is over,” declared Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf on X platform, emphasizing resilience.
U.S. Central Command stated the strikes were meant to impose significant costs on Iran for attacking civilian-crewed commercial ships in international waters. The military targeted Iranian air defenses, radars, and over 60 small boats involved in harassment activities in the strait.
The U.S. military affirmed its readiness to hold Iran accountable if agreements are breached. Iran recognized the strikes but reported no losses. Iranian state media cited explosions in Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, and Sirik. On Wednesday morning, Bahrain and Kuwait, both hosting U.S. military forces, reported missile alerts following Iran’s retaliatory strikes.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard acknowledged its attacks on U.S. installations, accusing the American military of ceasefire violations and breaching the Islamabad agreement with airstrikes on coastal sites in Iran.
Simultaneous to U.S. strikes, President Trump attended a NATO summit in Turkey. The U.S. also rescinded a license permitting Iranian oil sales under the interim agreement, affecting Iran’s ability to sell oil openly for U.S. dollars. This decision followed an attack on a tanker near Oman, which caught fire, and two other vessels that sustained damage but continued their journey without injuries.
Tehran continues to maintain control over the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial channel for global energy markets where a significant portion of traded oil and natural gas passes. The ships attacked reportedly opted for a route near Oman’s shore, contrary to Iran’s directive. Tehran claims only its approved route is safe, and recent attacks have targeted those using the alternative path.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry condemned an attack on their tanker, the Al Rekayyat, labeling it an “unacceptable attack” on international navigation and energy security, holding Iran legally responsible.
The interim U.S.-Iran deal allowed free passage through the strait for 60 days, though Iran insisted on controlling ship routes and charging passage fees, opposing long-standing practices. The U.S. and Gulf Arab states remain firm against Iran’s proposed fees.
