Novak Djokovic Wins Record-Breaking Wimbledon Quarterfinal Amid Roof Dispute

Novak Djokovic triumphed in the longest quarterfinal match in Wimbledon history, defeating Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime. The match, which spanned over 5 hours and 15 minutes, was filled with competitive drama and a notable dispute over venue conditions.

Djokovic, aged 39, secured his victory with scores of 7-6 (12-10), 3-6, 6-3, 6-7 (7-4), 7-6 (10-4). The match featured a dynamic interaction between Djokovic and tournament supervisor Denise Parnell about whether to close the venue’s roof. Parnell suggested closing the roof due to evening conditions after the second set, but Djokovic advocated for maintaining an outdoor setup.

“You don’t want to get to 8.30pm? It’s 7.40pm now. We can play a whole another set outdoors. We’re an outdoor tournament,” Djokovic argued.

Djokovic highlighted inconsistencies in previous matches, questioning why the decision to close the roof was made early in comparison to prior matches. Despite the disagreement, the decision was announced to close the roof.

Auger-Aliassime appeared to side with Djokovic, questioning the need for closure during their exchange. Following the dispute, Djokovic proceeded to win the set 6-3. This win marked Djokovic as the oldest man to reach the Wimbledon semifinals in over 50 years. As the 24-time Grand Slam winner, Djokovic is set to face the defending champion, Jannik Sinner, in the semifinals on Centre Court.
