Federal Immigration Agent Shoots Mexican Man in Houston During Deportation Crackdown

Federal agents have been involved in at least 21 shootings as part of President Trump’s deportation crackdown, with deadly outcomes for several victims. The most recent incident took place in Houston, where a federal immigration agent shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a man from Mexico.

Reports indicate that Araujo was driving a vehicle stopped by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers at approximately 6:50 a.m. Officers attempted to arrest him, and during the encounter, Araujo is said to have ‘weaponized his vehicle,’ an act that allegedly endangered the agents. In response, an officer fired at Araujo, striking him in the abdomen. He was taken to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

The terminology used by federal officials, stating that Araujo attempted to weaponize his car, mirrors language often employed in previous similar incidents. These characterizations frequently face scrutiny, with many claims about assaults on officers needing further investigation and evidence.

A statement from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency indicated that officers shot at Araujo in self-defense. However, supporting evidence for this account has yet to be disclosed.

Since President Trump commenced his second term in January 2025, five individuals, including three U.S. citizens, have been killed in similar incidents, most involving agents shooting at vehicles.
