The Dangers of a Social Media Trend: An Alabama Teen’s Experience
An Alabama teenager, Eli Blackmon, experienced severe consequences after participating in a social media trend involving the microwaving of sensory toys. The incident resulted in significant injuries, highlighting the risks associated with viral challenges.
The Trend and Its Impact
At the age of 11, Eli discovered videos on TikTok promoting the microwaving of NeeDoh squishy toys to soften them. These sensory toys, similar to stress balls, are described by the manufacturer as soft, stretchy, and filled with a unique dough-like substance. Inspired by content he saw online, Eli believed the experiment would be harmless.
According to Eli, ‘I thought it was harmless because an adult tried it and nothing happened.’ However, shortly after microwaving the toy, the hot gel inside it exploded, causing serious burns to Eli’s neck, chest, and hands.
A Mother’s Perspective
Eli’s mother, Fallon Blackmon, recalled the traumatic moment when her son suffered the injuries. ‘At first, I was just feeling frantic,’ she shared. ‘He was screaming and unable to communicate.’ Fallon, with her background in emergency services, understood the gravity of the situation despite her internal panic.
Fallon emphasized her lack of awareness regarding this dangerous trend prior to the accident. She noted, ‘If I was aware, we would have had a conversation about not doing it.’
Medical Treatment and Recovery
After the incident, Eli required intensive medical care. The burns necessitated four months of weekly visits to the burn unit. During these sessions, doctors undertook the painful process of scraping off dead skin and performing wound care. Despite the severity, skin grafts were ruled out due to potential risks to Eli’s airway.
Eli stated, ‘I thought I was going to die.’ As the wounds healed, chemical burns were administered to treat developing scar tissue. Additional complications arose, including a rash from bandages leading to a staph infection and severe gastrointestinal issues due to fluid loss from the burn.
Impact on Lifestyle and Financial Burden
An accomplished jiu-jitsu athlete, Eli missed months of training and competition as he recovered. His family faced substantial hospital bills, doctor’s fees, and the cost of wound care supplies throughout this period.
Encouraging Prevention
Now recovered, Eli and his mother aim to raise awareness to prevent similar incidents. ‘If you purchase these types of toys, please mention this trend and advise kids not to do it,’ urged Fallon Blackmon. She highlighted that even children not actively using social media might hear of such trends from peers.
Eli continues to manage his scar daily, undergoing stretches and regular moisturizing. His confidence remains unaffected, thanks to supportive friends and family.
His advice to other children contemplating social media challenges is clear. ‘Don’t do it! Talk to your parents,’ said Eli. His mother echoes this sentiment, emphasizing their family’s willingness to share their story to prevent other children from enduring lifelong scars and trauma.
A spokesperson from TikTok USDS Joint Venture confirmed to Fox News Digital that content promoting dangerous behavior is against community guidelines and promptly removed when detected. Fox News Digital also reached out to NeeDoh’s manufacturer for comment.
