Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Faces Maintenance and Vandalism Challenges

Visitors to the National Mall in Washington on Monday discovered that the iconic Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was partially drained. Sections of the area were fenced off, disrupting the view that many consider a highlight of the capital.

This closure is part of an ongoing renovation project embroiled in controversy. Issues involve maintenance concerns and differing opinions on the causes of damage to the historic pool. Officials had planned for the pool’s renovation to be complete for the nation’s 250th anniversary on Fourth of July. They explained that draining the pool allows for the removal of Independence Day fireworks debris and inspections for damage to the pool’s liner. Maintenance issues are also being addressed.

The controversy primarily involves claims of vandalism, with accusations of the liner being cut and pulled back. President Donald Trump described the damage as a 350-foot “gash.” Authorities have arrested several individuals over alleged site damage, though at least one individual denies wrongdoing. This situation has sparked debate about the multimillion-dollar refurbishment, which included a new dark blue coating for the century-old pool.

The disruption coincides with the summer travel season. The Lincoln Memorial is one of the most visited sites, attracting approximately 8.5 million visitors in 2024. Washington, D.C. saw over 27 million visitors last year. During the summer, closures of major landmarks are particularly noticeable.

On Monday, many tourists expressed disappointment over the closure. A visitor from Reno, Nevada, commented on the “ruined” sight, reminiscing about past peaceful walks by the pool. “It was just relaxing and nice, and now it feels totally ruined,” he told Newsweek.

Another visitor from Reno, Landon Miller, shared his first experience in the capital. He remarked on the irony of the drained and fenced pool, reflecting on its symbolism. “This is supposed to be like the epitome of the United States,” Miller shared, “if this doesn’t represent the current state of politics, then really nothing else does.” Despite disappointment, he noted the power of being there.

Similarly, a father from Charleston, South Carolina, expressed discontent about his children missing the full experience of the Reflecting Pool. Paul Zeisset, a local, remarked on how unnatural the fencing felt. “It’s too bad that the whole renovation project turned out to get us nothing,” he commented.

Past challenges since the renovations include reports of algae growth and peeling of the coating. Damage to the liner was detected on June 9, attributed to vandalism by Trump administration officials. However, some critics suspect issues originate from the renovation itself.
