Pentagon and DOJ Form Task Force to Address Media Leaks

Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth has announced the formation of a joint task force with the Department of Justice aimed at identifying and prosecuting officials who leak sensitive information to the media. The Pentagon’s Office of General Counsel (OGC) now has the authority to request and receive information, support, and records across the department related to news media leak investigations.

Hegseth emphasized the risks of leaked information, stating, “Leaked information risks lives; these new tools and processes will greatly assist us in protecting our joint force.” He underlined the importance of maintaining confidentiality, warning that breaches will face full legal consequences.

The announcement followed recent subpoenas issued to New York Times reporters, compelling them to testify about security concerns involving a plane linked to President Donald Trump. This move faced criticism from various media and press freedom groups, accusing the administration of trying to intimidate journalists performing legitimate news-gathering.

David McCraw, an attorney for The New York Times, highlighted the concerning nature of federal agents approaching news reporters, stressing the essential role of journalists in informing the public about government operations.

This task force initiative is part of Hegseth’s broader efforts to curb media leaks since assuming his Pentagon role last year. He had also threatened polygraph tests for suspects and attempted to impose restrictions on reporters covering the Pentagon. Many reporters have resisted by surrendering their press badges instead of agreeing to these new restrictions.

Furthermore, a judge has recently issued a preliminary injunction, challenging the department’s policy that required journalists to have a chaperone, citing First Amendment violations in a case brought by The New York Times.
