A truck driver in England received a prison sentence of over 13 years for smuggling cocaine worth approximately $9.6 million hidden in a shipment of Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS clothing. The shipment itself was legitimate, with no allegations against the exporter or importer. SKIMS and Kardashian representatives did not comment.
The United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency reported Jakub Jan Konkel’s sentencing to 13 years and six months after a detailed investigation. Border Force officers stopped him at the Port of Harwich in Essex on September 5, following his arrival from the Hook of Holland, Netherlands.
Authorities discovered 28 pallets of SKIMS clothing and detected a hidden compartment in the truck designed to conceal the drugs. Inside, they found 90 packages of cocaine, each weighing a kilogram, showcasing a street value of around $9.6 million.
It’s common for trafficking groups to hide narcotics within legitimate commercial shipments, as explained by NCA Operations Manager Paul Orchard. Organized crime units employ drivers like Konkel for transporting Class A drugs, masked by legitimate loads.
The investigation revealed an unexplained 16-minute stop, where Konkel allegedly loaded the drugs with knowledge shared only with the smuggling group. Initially denying involvement, Konkel later admitted to smuggling in return for €4,500, equivalent to roughly $5,200.
“We seized a significant amount of cocaine, disrupting the smuggling operation,” stated Orchard.
Border Force Assistant Director Jason Thorn emphasized the operation’s impact on criminal networks, depriving them of substantial profits.
Thorn remarked, “These drugs destroy lives and bring misery to communities.”
Associated Press provided additional details for this report.
