MLB Players Eye Olympic Participation Amid CBA Talks

The 2027 MLB season is uncertain due to the ongoing collective bargaining agreement. The potential participation of MLB players in the Olympics has emerged as a significant issue two years ahead.

According to ESPN, MLB owners are supporting the idea of players competing in the Olympics for the first time, but logistical challenges exist. These include accommodations, tickets, and mandatory participation agreements.

The owners plan to shut down the season for nearly two weeks, but they face opposition over logistics. ESPN reported. If top players refuse to play in the Olympics, there is a proposal to place them on the restricted list for a month without pay.

The MLB Players Association opposes these ideas. The report suggests MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred could discipline players ‘for just cause.’ Ian Penny, MLBPA special advisor, stated the organization’s focus is on fair treatment for players, considering the financial value they bring to the LA28 Olympics.

Penny emphasized direct compensation for players related to expenses and commercial rights. The proposals aim to protect players from financial loss while benefiting the non-athlete stakeholders in the Games.

Team Japan defeated Team USA 3-2 during the World Baseball Classic Championship at loanDepot park in March 2023. Many players like Aaron Judge, Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and Mike Trout showed interest in Olympic participation, having represented the USA in the WBC.

Accommodation details remain uncertain. The LA28 committee offers 435 hotel rooms, while the MLB reserved 200 — 100 for its players and 100 for the Japanese team expected to qualify next year. Four players told ESPN they would stay at the Olympic Village at UCLA, with hotel rooms reserved for families.

The six-team Olympic baseball tournament will be at Dodger Stadium. The United States qualifies as the host nation, joined by the Dominican Republic and Venezuela from the World Baseball Classic.

Team grouping includes a bye into the semifinals for winners. The league will shut down for 11 days for the tournament and the preceding All-Star Game. The United States has reached three consecutive WBC finals, winning in 2017 against Puerto Rico but losing to Japan in 2023 and to Venezuela recently.
