Examining Political Candidates with Extreme Views
Diversity in voices and perspectives is vital for American democracy. However, throughout history, some candidates have held beliefs that clash with constitutional ideals and democratic values. Figures like David Duke, who promoted white supremacy, and George Lincoln Rockwell, a Nazi presidential hopeful, serve as examples. Similarly, Lyndon LaRouche frequently ran for president despite supporting antisemitic theories. Earl Browder, aligned with Soviet communism, also sought the presidency.
Today, candidates from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) echo these controversial figures. They have expressed ideas and policies through public records that align them with this group. The DSA advocates for replacing capitalism with social ownership and aims to reduce policing, incarceration, and American military strength. Their platform openly states, “Capitalism is a system designed by the owning class to exploit the rest of us for their own profit.” They pledge to decrease the U.S. military budget, close overseas bases, and withdraw from NATO. The DSA’s leadership seeks “the total dissolution of the United States empire,” accusing the country of imperialism.
The DSA employs a “dirty break” strategy, using the Democratic Party’s ballot line to further their goals. This mirrors Donald Trump’s approach to controlling the Republican Party. Trump’s tactics involved exploiting racial fears about immigration and questioning Barack Obama’s birthplace, eventually gaining power through these methods. The DSA’s approach includes fostering antisemitic sentiments among progressives, a strategy reminiscent of Trump’s. This approach has proven effective politically.
Darializa Avila Chevalier, recently nominated for New York’s 13th Congressional District, urged Americans to “seize the means of production.” She has expressed admiration for revolutionary figures and attended a rally praising acts of resistance by Hamas. Chevalier, a co-founder of a Columbia University organization, has pushed for the “eradication of Western civilization.”
Melat Kiros, victorious in the Colorado primary, has labeled American and Israeli policies as contributors to attacks on their soil. She has been reluctant to label antisemitic attacks as such and has advocated for the elimination of the Israeli state, similar to rhetoric used by Iranian leaders.
I have a history as a Democrat, serving under President Clinton and at international institutions. I ran for Congress in Missouri and believe in protecting vulnerable citizens while fostering opportunities for individual potential. I criticize Donald Trump for undermining democratic norms while enriching his family at public expense. Democrats must hold themselves to the same standard they demand from Republicans. During the Trump era, Republicans were criticized for ignoring extremist views and actions. Democrats must now act likewise with DSA candidates.
These candidates haven’t wielded significant power yet, but their intentions raise concerns. If Democrats condemn extremism on the right, they should do so on the left. It might seem strategic to embrace DSA candidates for a Congressional majority, but this risks future crises as these candidates gain leverage.
Democrats have long criticized Republican silence during Trump’s tenure. It’s time to adhere to this accountability standard. Prevent conceding the country to those with anti-American sentiments.
