Contentious Confirmation Hearing for Todd Blanche
Todd Blanche, formerly President Trump’s personal lawyer and his nominee for attorney general, is facing a potentially heated confirmation hearing. His handling of sensitive legal files and the perception of political bias are under scrutiny.

Since April, leading the Justice Department, Blanche has continued Trump’s efforts against political adversaries. This includes indictments against figures like former FBI Director James Comey and civil rights organizations such as the Southern Poverty Law Center. Additionally, the department has initiated investigations into legal cases involving Trump.
Trump supports Blanche, praising his leadership within the department. Chuck Grassley, the senior Republican on the Judiciary Committee, has endorsed Blanche, emphasizing his qualifications and commitment to law enforcement. The National Association of Police Organizations has echoed this support.
Conversely, Democrats accuse Blanche of compromising the Justice Department’s traditional independence, using its prosecutorial authority politically, and eroding legal credibility. Dick Durbin, the leading Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, criticized Blanche for subordinating the department’s independence to political loyalty, causing long-term damage.
Controversial Practices and Dismissals
Concerns among legal professionals about Blanche’s practices have surfaced. A letter from 1,200 former Justice Department employees urges the Senate to oppose his nomination, citing wrongful dismissals of career staff that undermine departmental operations and national safety.
Blanche dismissed these critiques, stating that the signatories represent a small fraction of the DOJ’s workforce. He emphasized ongoing bipartisan engagement to address questions about his candidacy.
