Rep. Haley Stevens Faces Criticism in Michigan Senate Campaign
During a recent campaign event, Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., made headlines while trying to energize her Senate campaign. Her comments led to online ridicule. “I am going to be working on our behalf. I am going to be telling the stories on our behalf. And you better believe I’m going to bring it with a little bit of enthusiasm, a little bit of energy and a little bit of stick-it-to-them,” Stevens stated. She emphasized that this was the “Michigan way.”
Stevens’ remarks drew criticism just weeks before Michigan’s Senate primaries. Some say she lacks the charisma to compete with progressive Democratic challenger Abdul El-Sayed. “Maybe Abdul El-Sayed is winning hearts and minds in liberal Michigan or maybe he’s just running against this?” said Brent Scher, editor-in-chief of the Daily Wire.
The Michigan primary has captured national attention. It features El-Sayed, who advocates moving the party further left on healthcare and international relations, against Stevens, a more established candidate with the support of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. The primary dynamics shifted when another Democrat, Mallory McMorrow, withdrew from the race, eliminating a moderate option. The impact on Stevens and El-Sayed remains uncertain.
El-Sayed has faced criticism for stances like abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and questioning U.S. ties with Israel. However, his campaign has gained momentum and attention among progressives.
Stevens, while avoiding controversy, has critics questioning her presentation on the trail. “Is this for real?!” Fox News Political Analyst Lisa Boothe questioned on social media. Chris Gustafson, communications director for the Senate Leadership Fund, questioned Stevens’ change in accent by comparing past ads.
Mario Nawfal highlighted the awkwardness of Stevens’ clip, comparing her to comedic roles. Meghan McCain likened the situation to something from a sitcom.
After the Aug. 4 primary, either Stevens or El-Sayed will proceed to the general election on Nov. 3.
