Love Island USA Winners Trinity Tatum and Bryce Alakai Discuss Their Journey

Trinity Tatum and Bryce Alakai emerged as the winning couple from the eighth season of ‘Love Island USA.’ They found love on the show and confirmed their relationship with the first ‘I love you’ on national TV. The pair recently appeared on the ‘TODAY’ show for their first interview since departing from the Fiji villa.

During their interview, Alakai, whose real name is Bryce Dettloff, described the intensity of emotions on the show. He explained to co-host Craig Melvin that the experience involved significant anxiety and pressure. ‘Comfort in those moments brings us closer,’ he shared, adding that they provide support for each other during challenges both on and off the show.

The couple spent six weeks in the villa with other contestants. They connected on Day 1 and decided to focus on their relationship despite opportunities to explore with others. Tatum noted that Alakai’s personality motivated her to commit, saying, ‘I want to work this out instead of trying other people.’

A primary challenge was their age difference; Tatum is 22, and Alakai turned 30 on the show. However, Alakai found Tatum to be ‘the most mature person on the show,’ appreciating her intellect and humor. Tatum remarked that the age gap no longer felt significant.

The rapid progress of their relationship, including their admission of love within six weeks, was questioned. Yet, Tatum explained that constant interaction allowed for deep intimacy, stating, ‘If you could be around somebody that long and you think you won’t fall in love? That’s kind of insane.’

Since leaving the show, Tatum and Alakai experience ‘separation anxiety’ when apart. Alakai commented on the intense connection they share, noting how any separation feels unsettling.

Looking ahead, the couple is planning their future outside the villa. Recently returning from Fiji, Alakai described being without phones for 50 days as overwhelming yet enlightening. Tatum, a native of Virginia, expressed her interest in staying close to Alakai in Los Angeles, eager to explore the city together.
