Family Mourns Fatal ICE Shooting of Mexican Immigrant in Texas
In Houston, Ronaldo Salgado discovered his father, 52-year-old Mexican immigrant Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, was fatally shot by an ICE officer through a video online. The video showed Salgado Araujo ‘screaming’ for help as he bled.
In an interview with CBS News, Ronaldo described his frantic search for answers, which he found elusive. His brother, Lorenzo Salgado Jr., learned of their father’s death while on a flight to Houston, unable to say goodbye after living in the U.S. for over 30 years. Ronaldo expressed deep guilt about the incident, believing he could have intervened had he arrived sooner.
Conflicting Accounts
The Department of Homeland Security reported that Salgado Araujo used his work van as a weapon during a traffic stop in Houston on July 7, leading an ICE agent to shoot him. His family and three men present during the incident challenge this claim, asserting no criminal record for Salgado Araujo, which the DHS hasn’t disputed. Those three men now face deportation.
While DHS acknowledged Salgado Araujo wasn’t the intended target in the operation, federal officials, including the Justice Department, are investigating the shooting. Local authorities announced separate probes, with Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare prepared to press charges if evidence of misconduct emerges. Teare questioned the training and methods of ICE agents in this incident.
FBI Investigation
On Tuesday, court papers revealed the FBI is investigating whether drugs were present in the van. An FBI agent’s search warrant application detailed seeing bags of a ‘white crystal-like substance’ likely methamphetamine through the van’s window. Despite having photos, law enforcement hadn’t yet entered the vehicle.
There is no evidence linking ICE’s pursuit of the van before the shooting to drug concerns. The FBI continues to investigate factors contributing to the occupants’ attempted escape.
Concerns Over ICE Tactics
Days after Salgado Araujo’s death, ICE faced additional scrutiny when another immigrant, Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, was fatally shot during a traffic stop in Maine. This incident prompted a temporary pause on vehicle stops, although backlash from President Trump led to an order resuming the operations.
Ronaldo Salgado reflected on his father’s immigration journey, emphasizing his desire for a better life for his family through education and hard work. Salgado Araujo’s life, characterized by a commitment to family and music, underscored the American dream’s appeal.
