The presence of wildfire smoke has resulted in poor air quality across the Midwest and Northeast, creating smelly and hazy conditions that have been deemed hazardous by health experts. In certain areas, the air quality ranks as the worst globally.

Authorities strongly advise staying indoors or wearing masks when outside. In your home and car, keeping windows and doors closed can minimize smoke infiltration. Utilizing air conditioning can assist in maintaining clearer air, but activating a key feature is essential.

Using Air Recirculation in Vehicles

Your car’s climate control system might have an air recirculation button, a feature often overlooked. This button recycles air within the car, preventing outside smoky air from entering. It not only helps maintain cooler temperatures inside but also enhances fuel efficiency.

Air Conditioning Adjustments at Home

Home air conditioning units typically recycle indoor air. However, some units have a fresh air intake setting. Dr. Brian Christman from Vanderbilt University advises against using this setting during smoky conditions. Instead, switch to recirculation mode.

Ensure your unit’s filter is effective and ideally rated MERV 13 or higher to keep indoor air clean. Using blankets or towels to seal cracks, like those beneath doors, can further prevent smoke penetration.

The Role of Air Purifiers

If an air purifier is available, even a room-sized one, keep it running in the space where you spend most of your time, suggests Jennifer Stowell from Boston University’s Center for Climate and Health.

Forecast and Considerations

Meteorologist Darrius Stringer forecasts that smoky conditions will persist across the Midwest and Northeast through Friday. However, expected storms and rain over the weekend may lead to improved air quality by Sunday.
