Trump’s Continued Claims of Election Fraud: A Detailed Examination

Following the 2020 U.S. presidential election, officials appointed by Donald Trump, including those in the Department of Justice and cybersecurity agencies, affirmed that the election was fair and devoid of significant fraud or foreign meddling. Despite this, Trump, a Republican, has sought to challenge these conclusions, a trend he is likely to continue in an upcoming national address on Thursday.

In his administration, Trump has selected loyalists who support his unproven claims that the 2020 election was stolen. This sentiment is evident as some of his nominees avoid directly acknowledging who won in 2020, instead, they merely mention that Democrat Joe Biden became president. For instance, Jay Clayton, nominated as the next national intelligence director, refrained from a direct answer during his confirmation, stating, “He had the most electoral votes,” referring to Biden. When asked if that means Biden was the winner, he remained noncommittal.

Conspiracy theories promoted by Trump allege international manipulation of U.S. voting systems. Although these claims have led to defamation suits against his allies, Trump hints at releasing “big news” related to the election integrity.

“There has been six-plus years of consistent findings from the intelligence community and from everyone who’s looked at it that there was no foreign interference in 2020, and our voting systems were secure and accurate,” said Victoria Bassetti of States United.

Various reviews and court cases surrounding the 2020 election have consistently found no major issues. Trump’s own attorney general, William Barr, confirmed the absence of significant fraud, which led to Trump’s dissatisfaction. Chris Krebs, responsible for monitoring election cybersecurity, labeled the 2020 election secure, prompting Trump to dismiss him and later launch an investigation upon resuming power in 2025.

An intelligence report from early in the Biden administration, finalized in 2021 during Trump’s last days as president, stated no foreign voting interference in 2020. Moreover, Trump himself signed a document confirming no foreign power altered U.S. election outcomes.

Since returning to office, Trump has initiated a review of the 2020 election. This has involved seizing voting records in critical areas like Fulton County, Georgia, and Maricopa County, Arizona. Kurt Olsen, associated with election conspiracy theories, leads the review. Despite these investigations, substantial findings have yet to surface. David Becker from the Center for Election Integrity & Research emphasized the use of considerable taxpayer resources on these unresolved claims.

Despite ongoing conspiracy theories, which claim foreign interference, voting machine companies have pursued and won defamation lawsuits against media outlets and individuals promoting these allegations. Fox News and others have paid significant settlements due to airing such claims.

Becker described a recurring pattern in the propagation of these theories, where sweeping public claims lack the factual basis required in legal settings. He advised that any new assertions from Trump about election fraud should undergo similar rigorous scrutiny. “If someone’s alleging a crime that occurred six years ago, we shouldn’t be responding to their claims,” Becker stated. “We should be demanding they meet the burden of proof.”
