Brenda Fricker, acclaimed for her role as Bridget Fagan Brown in My Left Foot, has died at the age of 81. The Irish actress passed away in Dublin after a period of ill health, her agent, Phil Belfield, confirmed.
Fricker gained prominence by becoming the first Irish woman to secure an Academy Award, winning Best Supporting Actress in 1990 for her portrayal of Christy Brown’s determined mother. Christy, played by Daniel Day-Lewis who won Best Actor, was born with cerebral palsy, controlling only his left foot.
“We will never see her like again and the world is lesser for the lack of her,” Belfield expressed. “I was honored to know, love, and work with her, and she will always have a place in my heart and in the hearts of countless film and TV enthusiasts worldwide.”
Fricker’s role as a homeless woman in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York showcased her versatility. She befriended Macaulay Culkin’s character in Central Park. Her extensive career saw her in more than 90 films and TV shows, including the BBC’s Casualty and Veronica Guerin alongside Cate Blanchett.
Born in Dublin in 1945, Fricker received the city’s highest tribute earlier this year with the Freedom of the City. Her autobiography, She Died Young: A Life in Fragments, published in September 2025, chronicles her joyous childhood with sister Grania, battles with sexual violence and mental health challenges, landing on the Irish Sunday Times bestseller list.
Simon Harris, Ireland’s deputy prime minister, mourned the loss, emphasizing Fricker as a national treasure. “She truly was among the greatest exports this country has ever produced and an ambassador for Irish talent on the world stage,” he stated. “Quite simply, we will never see the like of her ever again.”
