NFL Suspends Cardinals Executive for Gambling Policy Violation
The NFL has indefinitely suspended Ryan Gold, an executive with the Arizona Cardinals, for breaching the league’s gambling rules. This suspension comes after an investigation uncovered that Gold shared confidential information about the Cardinals’ 2026 draft selections before they were public. He also engaged in parlay betting on NFL and college games.
The NFL did not disclose who received the sensitive information from Gold. According to the league, the Gambling Policy clearly states that all NFL personnel are prohibited from participating in or facilitating any form of sports betting and from disclosing non-public information to third parties. Despite finding no evidence that Gold’s actions compromised the integrity of any NFL games, the league emphasized the seriousness of any Gambling Policy breaches.
The policies and expectations for all NFL employees are clear, comprehensive, and consistently communicated,” stated the Cardinals. “We fully support the league’s decision, which concerns a single employee. Our focus remains on preparing for the upcoming training camp and the 2026 season.
Gold has been with the Cardinals for 13 seasons, advancing to director of college scouting in June 2025. Prior to this promotion, he served as the assistant director of college scouting from 2022-2024, following four years as a college scouting coordinator from 2018-2021. Gold retains the right to appeal his suspension, although he was unavailable for comments on Friday.
The NFL maintains strict rules against gambling for both players and personnel. Over 20,000 league affiliates have been reached by the NFL’s gambling education initiatives. The policy specifies that players must not place bets on NFL games, fix or manipulate game outcomes, or share confidential game information. While players can legally bet on other sports away from team locations, this is not permitted for league or club staff.
The NFL confirmed that the Arizona Cardinals fully cooperated during the investigation and found no evidence suggesting any other staff or players were involved in Gold’s activities. Interviews and electronic records were part of the league’s review process.
Since 1963, at least 15 players have been suspended for gambling-related violations, including recent suspensions. The last indefinite suspension was for Isaiah Rodgers, formerly of the Indianapolis Colts, in June 2023.
