Chicago Cubs’ Trade Deadline Strategy Remains Unclear
The Chicago Cubs find themselves at a crossroads as the August 3 trade deadline approaches. Jed Hoyer, president of baseball operations, stated that the next two weeks will be crucial in understanding the team’s position and the broader league dynamics. He highlighted the current uncertainty about which teams might decide to sell players, affecting the Cubs’ decision-making process.
Hoyer remarked, “We’ve got to wait and get closer to the deadline. This year, everyone in the AL is still in the race.” He reflected on the 2023 season, recalling a similar situation where the Cubs seemed poised to sell but instead made a strong post-All-Star break run. They retained star player Cody Bellinger and acquired third baseman Jeimer Candelario, finishing just out of a wild-card spot.
As of Friday, the Cubs hold the top wild-card spot and trail the Milwaukee Brewers by five games in the NL Central. Hoyer mentioned that they have put themselves in a favorable position and might focus on fortifying their pitching staff rather than pursuing position players.
Injuries have plagued the Cubs’ rotation, but there is promising news. Jameson Taillon is expected to return soon, providing much-needed support. The right-handed pitcher suffered a hamstring injury in June and is set to be activated for the series against the Detroit Tigers next week. Manager Craig Counsell stated, “Hopefully Jameson will pitch coming up next week.”
Other pitchers making progress include Edward Cabrera, who is recovering from a leg strain. Cabrera has started pitching off the mound and is eyeing a return in early August. Hoby Milner, a lefty reliever, is nearly ready to return after an appendectomy. Closer Daniel Palencia’s recovery has faced setbacks, delaying his return to mid-August. Justin Steele, who hasn’t pitched since April 2025, could start bullpen sessions soon, according to Counsell.
For position players, third baseman Matt Shaw continues to deal with a wrist sprain and is not batting yet. Hoyer emphasized that any additions from the injured list won’t influence the Cubs’ trade deadline actions. He reiterated the need for pitching depth, noting, “You can never have too much pitching and you never have enough.”
The team’s management is prepared to make strategic decisions as the deadline nears, aiming to bolster their roster despite the challenges faced during this season.
