Police Transfer Activist to Hospital Amid Jantar Mantar Hunger Strike

Police in New Delhi transferred Sonam Wangchuk, a prominent activist, to a hospital after his health declined due to a 20-day hunger strike. His protest is part of the Cockroach Janta Party movement, demanding education reform and the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Allegations have surfaced regarding leaked exam papers, and the movement also advocates compensation for families affected by related suicides.

Since May, Wangchuk’s strike has gained attention. His campaign was galvanized by a Supreme Court Chief Justice’s comparison of unemployed youth to “cockroaches.” This insult was turned into a political movement, amassing over 21 million Instagram followers quickly. Supporters demand reforms to the examination system while gathering at Jantar Mantar, a protest site in Delhi secured by police barricades.

Sachin Sharma, deputy commissioner of police, stated Wangchuk’s hospitalization was essential due to his deteriorating health. He emphasized the move was performed following medical guidance and court orders. In response, the Cockroach Party accused the government of forcefully taking Wangchuk without consent.

Following Wangchuk’s removal, Abhijeet Dipke, the party’s founder, announced his own hunger strike. He criticized the police actions, alleging they acted aggressively during Wangchuk’s transfer and claimed he was treated like a criminal.

Dipke confirmed plans to march to India’s Parliament when the session begins on Monday. He stated the movement’s determination was only growing stronger. Authorities have increased security around Jantar Mantar, urging cooperation from protesters.
