Ryan Fox Clinches The Open Championship with a Remarkable Win

Ryan Fox, a robust 39-year-old golfer and son of a rugby legend, achieved his maiden major victory at The Open Championship in Southport, England. Despite the low expectations from spectators as he teed off in the final group, Fox managed to outshine many of golf’s luminaries who struggled that day.

Resilient and determined, Fox faced the daunting 18th hole at Royal Birkdale. He executed a stunning 330-yard drive between treacherous bunkers and followed with a precise 8-iron shot that landed just over 11 feet from the pin. This allowed him to sink a critical putt, earning him the title of Champion Golfer of the Year. Fox joined the ranks of distinguished New Zealand golfers like Sir Bob Charles, Michael Campbell, and Lydia Ko, who have all won major championships.

Fox’s final round of 68 brought his tournament total to 10-under par. His victory unfolded while competitors like Cameron Young, Scottie Scheffler, Sam Burns, and Si Woo Kim faltered. Young shot an impressive 64 but a bogey on the 18th cost him a playoff chance. Other contenders failed to maintain their leads, allowing Fox to capitalize with birdies on the 13th and 14th holes.

Despite challenges, including a mishap at the fairway bunker on the 17th, Fox’s adept recovery and strategic play through the demanding Royal Birkdale course showcased his complete golfing skills. While regarded as an underdog, Fox was far from unknown. He had previously secured four victories on the DP World Tour before transitioning to the PGA Tour in 2024. After slipping outside the top 100 in 2025, he rebounded by winning the Myrtle Beach Classic, eventually triumphing at the RBC Canadian Open against Sam Burns in a gripping playoff.

In the 2026 season, Fox ranked 58th in the Official World Golf Ranking and participated in all marquee PGA events, entering The Open with 150- to 200-to-1 odds. Following a second-round finish at even par, eight shots shy of the lead, Fox stunned everyone with a sensational 62 on Saturday, equaling the lowest men’s major championship round, catapulting him into the final pairing with Burns.
