FBI’s Comprehensive Efforts to Secure the 2026 World Cup
The United States hosted the World Cup final after more than thirty years, presenting the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) with a significant security challenge. FBI Director Kash Patel described managing security as akin to 78 Super Bowls over 38 days, the largest dedication of resources in the agency’s history.
Patel praised the FBI and its partners for preventing substantial criminal activity during the event, which welcomed 6.5 million attendees across 11 locations without major incidents. He emphasized the necessity for precise planning and execution to ensure safety. The tournament broke attendance records, attracting millions of visitors to the United States.
With nearly 5,000 personnel involved, including 4,000 from field offices and 800 from FBI Headquarters, the security operation was extensive. The Bureau also conducted approximately 300,000 background checks on players, coaches, and other accredited personnel.
The rapid response to the evolving drone threat was crucial. Director Patel highlighted the risk posed by drones in surveillance or potential attacks, which led to over 700 unauthorized drone removals.
The FBI established a counter-UAS school at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama to prepare local officers for drone detection and interception. These trained officers participated in intercept teams during the tournament, reflecting a growing capability since the U.S. last hosted the event.
Former FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino contributed significantly to developing the Bureau’s counter-drone program, which proved critical when investigators uncovered a coordinated attack plan during the tournament. Suspects allegedly aimed to use explosive drones to incite panic. The FBI thwarted the threat through a coordinated six-state operation, leading to charges against eight defendants.
International cooperation was a key element, with the FBI hosting the International Police Cooperation Center in Northern Virginia. Seventy personnel worked alongside U.S. city officers and security officials from participating nations.
The FBI assembled a Joint Operations Center with foreign police representatives from 46 of the 48 participating countries, enhancing real-time intelligence capabilities. Through its Intelligence Coordination Center, the FBI processed an average of 26 incidents daily and generated nearly 100 intelligence reports.
The White House Task Force on the FIFA World Cup played a pivotal role under President Donald Trump’s leadership, unifying federal, state, and local agencies through centralized planning. This coordination enabled efficient deployment of key personnel whenever required throughout the tournament venues.
Patel highlighted the success in maintaining security and enhancing visitor experiences, with billions in revenue generated across the United States. International fans enjoyed a variety of American cultural experiences, contributing to the event’s positive impact.
