Jack Lausch’s Athletic Journey: From College Football to MLB Draft
Jack Lausch, awarded the 2021 Daily Southtown Football Player of the Year, chose to play quarterback at Northwestern and left the door open for baseball. Originally recruited by Notre Dame for baseball, Lausch eventually accepted a football scholarship from Northwestern. Yet, baseball remained on his radar. “Baseball was always in my mind,” Lausch remarked, emphasizing he never dismissed the sport.
This foresight paid off. After joining Northwestern’s baseball team last spring, following a two-year break, the Cincinnati Reds selected him in the 17th round of the MLB draft on July 12, with the 512th overall pick. “It’s a dream come true,” Lausch expressed, grateful for the opportunity to improve and possibly play in the major leagues. He felt it was a validation of his hard work.
Lausch anticipated being drafted on the second day of the 20-round event, despite the anxiety of waiting. When the Reds called, he celebrated with family and friends. Brother Rice coach Sean McBride, noting Lausch’s path back to baseball, highlighted his enduring self-belief. “He’s a special kid and a competitor,” McBride said, optimistic about Lausch’s future.
During his redshirt sophomore year at Northwestern in 2024-2025, Lausch played football and baseball. He started in 10 football games and 43 of 44 baseball games. Ultimately, he dedicated himself to baseball. He understood the need to focus fully on baseball to compete effectively. Though leaving football was tough due to strong team ties, it opened new opportunities.
This spring, Lausch led Northwestern in several statistics: a .312 batting average, 16 home runs, and 41 RBIs. His selection coincided with a remarkable period for Brother Rice baseball. Zion Rose was drafted by the Kansas City Royals, Luke Lawrence signed with the Chicago White Sox, and Brady Cunningham won the MLB High School Home Run Derby.
Lausch is currently in Arizona for rookie camp, eagerly anticipating his minor-league deployment. “It’ll be a moment to savor,” Lausch stated, ready to demonstrate his skills and prove his place on the team.
