Tensions Rise as China Conducts Live-Fire Drills Near Taiwan

China has initiated two days of live-fire drills in the Taiwan Strait, starting Thursday. This follows a warning from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio about potential disruptions to trade in this critical waterway.

The maritime safety agency of China disclosed the drill locations near Dongshan Island in Fujian Province. This announcement came shortly after Rubio met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Manila.

Rubio, attending a summit in the Philippines, informed reporters about discussions regarding Taiwan. China has long claimed Taiwan as its territory, a claim that Taiwan rejects. The island remains a significant partner for the U.S., contributing microchips to key industries.

Rubio criticized China’s military maneuvers near Taiwan, saying they contradict the strategic stability agreed upon by former U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping earlier in Beijing.

China maintains its claim over Taiwan and its surrounding waters, regularly deploying warships and law enforcement vessels to assert its control.
