Efforts to Combat Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, health investigators conduct interviews as part of contact tracing efforts to identify individuals who interacted with Ebola patients. This method is crucial in controlling an outbreak, particularly for diseases like Ebola that lack an approved vaccine.

Armand Sprecher, an infectious diseases physician with Doctors Without Borders, explains the importance of identifying contacts swiftly to monitor and prevent further spread. Identifying people who cared for the infected or attended funerals where Ebola victims were present is essential. Such diligence aids in restricting the virus’s movement and ensures exposed individuals receive timely care.

Despite these efforts, the current outbreak remains challenging. Over 1,000 deaths and 2,400 cases occurred in the first two months alone. Daily cases continue rising, and over 80% of new cases emerge from unknown contacts. This gap in contact tracing raises concerns for experts like Nahid Bhadelia from Boston University.

Bhadelia notes that many cases might go undetected, and people often present symptoms late, diminishing their chances of survival. The outbreak’s location complicates tracking, with transient workers and conflict affecting tracing efforts. The World Health Organization (WHO) trains 21,000 community workers to enhance tracing capabilities.

The outbreak is worsening as many avoid treatment centers, with two-thirds of deaths occurring outside the health system. Boghuma Titanji from Emory University highlights the stigma associated with Ebola, contributing to mistrust of medical interventions.

Addressing the crisis requires building trust within afflicted communities. Initiating clinical trials for treatments and protective drugs could help improve trust and care access, according to Bhadelia. Though these treatments are limited to trials, they could encourage individuals to seek assistance, helping control the outbreak’s impact.
