Father Visits 30 MLB Stadiums in 30 Days to Raise Water Safety Awareness
A dedicated baseball fan is undertaking a significant journey to visit all 30 Major League Baseball stadiums in 30 days. His mission is to promote water safety awareness following the tragic loss of his young son.
Turning Tragedy Into a Mission
Jonathan St. Clair embarked on his journey 12 years after his 21-month-old son, Jasper, drowned in an ungated pool. The tragedy happened while Jasper was under the care of a trusted babysitter, and despite a week-long effort by doctors, Jasper could not be saved. St. Clair’s experience highlighted the dangers of water, especially for toddlers who have not yet learned to swim.
“We were taken aback by how we didn’t know the dangers of water or the importance of early swim lessons,” St. Clair explained.
St. Clair’s tour aims to raise awareness about drowning prevention and involves collaboration with similar-minded organizations in each city.
A Journey of Conversations and Support
St. Clair wears a life vest at games, capturing the attention of fellow fans and sparking conversations about his cause. Alongside his MLB cap featuring all 30 team logos, St. Clair is engaging fans in meaningful dialogue.
The journey has also brought unexpected moments of kindness, such as a fellow traveler offering his first-class seat. Support from families who have suffered similar losses has provided St. Clair comfort and encouragement.
Baseball as a Platform
Beyond his love for the sport, St. Clair leverages baseball to spotlight the importance of water safety. Having visited some stadiums before, he reflects on how his son, a prospective Little Leaguer, missed the chance to play the game he loves.
“I’ve always dreamt of visiting all 30 stadiums, yet doing it in 30 days was never the plan until now. Rising drowning incidents propelled this idea and the hope of raising awareness,” St. Clair said.
His voyage recently took him from Toronto to Cleveland and back to Detroit, navigating a meticulous schedule of flights, drives, and various modes of travel. The complexity of his itinerary presents challenges St. Clair is determined to overcome.
The Broader Goal
While the tour lasts just 30 days, St. Clair aims for long-term impact. He seeks to disseminate crucial information about water safety and drowning prevention, hoping to reduce incidents like the recent drownings in Ohio.
“Although achieving zero drownings might be impossible, raising awareness is essential. This 30-day challenge is substantial, yet the backing I have makes it feasible,” St. Clair noted.
With the support of his wife and a network of volunteers, St. Clair acknowledges the effort involves numerous contributors, significantly enriching his experience.
