Stage 18 Victory for Carapaz at the Tour de France
Team EF Education-Easypost achieved a significant win in the 2026 Tour de France. Richard Carapaz claimed victory in stage 18 at Orcières-Merlette. The stage marked a strong performance from the Ecuadorian as the race moved into the Alps.
The day’s stage was tailored for a large breakaway. After intense competition on the category one Côte d’Engins, a 14-rider group advanced. This group included Mads Pedersen, who aimed to regain points in the green jersey competition.
At the intermediate sprint, almost 130km into the stage, Pedersen maximized his points. A subsequent attack by Matteo Jorgenson, Tobias Halland Johannessen, Raúl García Pierna, Felix Engelhardt, and Mauro Schmid set the stage for Carapaz to make his move. As they tackled the penultimate climb, the group narrowed, leaving a final ascent to Orcières-Merlette.
With 4km to go, Carapaz attacked, shedding rivals Paret-Peintre and Johannessen. A second attack enabled Carapaz to break away and secure a solo victory.

Carapaz’s calculated strategy delivered his ninth Grand Tour stage win, setting a new record for South American riders. He moved into the Tour’s top 10 standings, despite being nearly seven minutes behind the ninth-place holder.

Tadej Pogačar’s team faced difficulties after several teammates withdrew due to illness. Isaac del Toro remained a key lieutenant for Pogačar. Yet, the team struggled as climbers like Brandon McNulty dropped out.
Pogačar, now wearing black shorts, appeared isolated but maintained confidence for the coming stages. Team members avoided close contact to minimize illness risk. While aiming to manage the third week, UAE Team Emirates braced for challenges from rival teams like BORA-hansgrohe.
Pedersen’s Comeback
Mads Pedersen rebounded from a disappointing stage 17. He entered a breakaway early in stage 18, focusing on the intermediate sprint. His determination paid off as he extended his lead for the green jersey with 25 new points.

In the Tour’s final week, riders continued to chase personal achievements. Yannis Voisard, holding the 11th position, was determined to break into the top 10. Meanwhile, debutant Aaron Gate aimed to finish his first Tour de France successfully.
