Quarterback Fernando Mendoza, the premier pick in this year’s draft, finalized a four-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders, valued at $57.27 million, on Thursday. The agreement includes a team option for a fifth year, providing flexibility for the Raiders.
Mendoza was the last of ten draft selections to sign with the Raiders. He expressed his enthusiasm in a statement posted on the team’s social media, saying, “I’m excited to get this thing signed. I’m excited to be a part of the silver and black. Can’t wait.”
During organized team activities and minicamp, Mendoza operated within the third-team offense. However, he is anticipated to assume a greater role as training camp starts on Wednesday.
Veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins, who joined the Raiders on a $20 million guaranteed free-agent contract, will start camp as the lead quarterback. The duration of Cousins’ tenure in this position will be closely watched throughout the camp and possibly into the season.
Mendoza aims to carry over the success from his last college football season, where he triumphed with a Heisman Trophy and led Indiana to secure its inaugural national championship.
